Abstract

A resilient coating at least one-sixteenth of an inch thick and having an energy absorption per bounce, as defined, of from 0.5 to 0.9 and a modulus of elasticity, as defined, of between 25 and 350 p.s.i., is applied to the fluid-contacting surface of an object intended for movement in a fluid medium, for reducing the frictional drag. The coating may be of an elastomeric material e.g. polyurethane rubber, natural or synthetic rubbers, and an outer skin of an oxidation- and abrasionresistant rubber such as a neoprene may be applied. The surfaces which may be coated include those of underwater missiles, submarines, boats, surf boards, water skis, rubber containers for gasoline, pumps, pipes and airplanes. Test results are quoted for models, coated by a casting technique with a polyurethane rubber made by mixing toluene diisocyanate with a polyester prepared from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and a small amount of trimethylol ethane.
