In a hand brake operating mechanism of the kind in which a light mechanical advantage is obtained without excessive angular movement of the hand lever by arranging for the lever to apply the brake by a number of successive movements, the lever being coupled to the brake rigging by ratchet or equivalent step by step mechanism in the brake rigging is coupled to a rigid ratchet toothed bar 16, which is axially movable through trunnion blocks 17 the ends of which are mounted for angular movement in a housing and the teeth 23 on the bar co-operate with an actuating member associated with the brake lever 12 is angularly movable about a fixed axis in the housing to move the bar axially to apply the brake, the bar 16 being urged towards the actuating member by spring loaded plunger 22 or equivalent spring means and being retained in the brake applied position by a pawl member 25 co-operating with further teeth on the bar.
