943,622. Brake pedal mechanisms. CHICAGO FORGING & MANUFACTURING CO. March 16, 1960, No. 9364/60. Heading F2E. A brake control mechanism comprises a pivotally-mounted main control lever 3 having a cylindrical housing 30 concentric with the pivotal axis of the lever, and cam surfaces 31a, arranged within the cylindrical housing on a stationary part of the mechanism, in which rounded members, such as rollers or balls 32, are located between the cam surfaces and the inner cylindrical surface of the cylindrical housing so that, when the control lever is turned in a given direction about its pivotal axis, the relative movement thus produced between the cylindrical surface and the cam surfaces causes the rounded members to become wedged between those surfaces, and in which movable releasing means, such as the arm 10 having ball operating fingers 33, extends into the housing for the purpose of releasing the rounded members from their wedged positions, the releasing means having an arm 11 outside the housing which is connected to a pivotally mounted brake release lever 16. In order to apply the auxiliary or emergency brakes by the mechanism, the vehicle driver need only apply a smooth continuous pressure on the pedal 5. This results in rotation of arm 3 in a clockwise direction, as shown in the drawing, about pivot 2 and in so doing the emergency brake cable (not shown) secured within the aperture 7 is pulled and the brakes are applied. When the driver desires to release the brake, it is necessary only that he apply foot pressure again in the same direction to the pedal 18 of the release lever 16. The pressure causes rotation of the lever 16 in a clockwise direction about the pivot 15.
