847,744. Indicators for shaft furnaces. HUTTENWERK SALZGITTER A.G. Aug. 15, 1958, No. 26331/58. Class 51 (2). Apparatus for controlling the operation of a blast furnace 1 comprises a probe in the form of a cranked tube 4 pivotally mounted in a stuffing box 7 on the cover 5 and the charging platform 6, and swinging about an axis substantially coincidental with the shaft periphery in an arc extending through the centre of said shaft. The probe may be moved vertically and also automatically in sequence to a number of positions on the aforementioned arc. It may be used to sample effluent gases and also may have a thermo-responsive element mounted in its inlet end. It may be cooled by water, compressed air or gas. A further probe is preferably mounted diametrically opposite the first, Fig. 2 (not shown).
