Abstract

847,615. Coating yarn. LEESONA HOLT Ltd., [formerly TWO GATES MILL Ltd.]. Jan. 22, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1956], No. 38886/56. Class 140. A method of applying and manually controlling the application of size to textile yarn comprises delivering stock size liquor and water in predetermined weight ratio to a chamber 18, delivering the mixture continuously from the chamber 18 to a tank 34 at a predetermined rate, passing yarn Y through the tank 34 at a given linear velocity, returning surplus mixture from the tank 34 to the chamber 18 continuously, controlling the admission of fresh mixture to the chamber 18 by the liquid level therein, the rate of delivery of the mixture to the tank 34 exceeding the rate at which it is picked up by the yarn, and the rate of delivery of stock size liquor to the chamber 18 being proportional to the speed of passage of the yarn and the amount of size to be applied thereto.. The apparatus operates as follows. Pumps 14, 16 deliver hot water and size liquor respectively from tanks 10, 12 to the mixing chamber 18 through a pipe 25, the relative strokes of the pumps 14, 16 being adjustable by means of a manually adjustable pivot 56 engaging a slot 55 in a crosshead 52 to vary the relative proportions of size and water delivered to the chamber 18. Alternatively, a variable gear may be employed to vary the speeds of the pumps in such a way, through a differential gear, to keep the sum of the two speeds the same. The crosshead 52 is manually adjustably linked at 58, 59 through parts 59 ... 63 to a shaft 64 driven from a squeeze roller 47 in the coating tank 34 to provide a correlation between the speed of passage of the yarn Y and the rate of delivery of water-size mixture to the chamber 18. The chamber 18, which is heated, e.g. by steam, and is thermostatically controlled, supplies the mixture via a pipe 33 to the tank 34 by a pump 29, a larger pump 38 returning excess mixture to the chamber 18. Paddles 19 driven by a shaft 23 which also drives the pumps 29, 38, agitate the mixture in the chamber 18. In operation, the operator watches the level in the chamber 18, and adjusts the pressure on squeeze rollers 47, 48 or the stroke of the pumps 14, 16 at 58, 59 to keep the level in chamber 18 constant. The strokes of the pumps 14, 16 are adjusted thereafter at 55, 56 to restore the original desired rate of size delivery from the tank 12 to the chamber 18. The pumps 14, 16 thus supply mixture to the chamber 18 at a rate equal to that at which the yarn Y absorbs the mixture in the tank 34. The admission of fresh mixture to the chamber 18 is controlled by a float 78 therein which actuates an adjustable valve 26 on the pipe 25 when the liquid level in the chamber 18 rises undesirably. The drive to the pumps 14, 16 includes an epicyclic gear embodying a slipping clutch which is actuated when the valve 26 is closed to reduce the speed of the pumps. The clutch may be associated with a pressure gauge and a warning light.
