Abstract

Ash-forming metal components are removed from polyolefins formed by polymerisation of an olefin in the presence of a catalyst including an aluminium compound and a heavy metal compound, by adding chelating agents containing carboxyl groups and/or oxy groups and which react with the ash-formers to form complex salts, and either dissolving this complex in an organic liquid solvent inert to the polymer or dispersing the complex in an organic dispersing liquid medium inert to the polymer. Specified chelating agents are aceto-acetic ester, acetyl acetone, benzoyl acetone, hydroxyquinolines, disalycalethylene-diamine and alpha-nitroso-beta-naphthol. The chelating agents may be used in excess and so serve as the organic liquid solvent. The specified polyolefin is ethylene. Specification 791,889 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 804,802.
