Abstract

<PICT:0847314/III/1> <PICT:0847314/III/2> For controlling the inlet and outlet passages 12, 13 of a chamber 11, Fig. 1, a flexible sleeve 14 slightly stretched over a support member 15 is inflated to make contact with the wall of the chamber by supplying air through a bore 22 in the support member. Such a control may be used for transferring a fixed volume of fluid from a sample flow to a carrier flow, for example, in gaschromatography. In Fig. IV a fixed-volume conduit FV has, at one end, a pair of controls a and b and at its other end another pair of controls c and d. Controls b and d are initially closed so that sample gas S flows from a through the fixed volume conduit to c, a and c are then shut by an operating pressure OP to isolate a slug of sample gas and b and d are opened so that the carrier gas flow C flushes the slug of sample gas to a chromatographic column. Devices are described in Figs. V, VI wherein the carrier gas flow and the sample gas flow can proceed through the device at the same time without mixing.
