Abstract
847,298. Structural expansion joints. CONCRETE Ltd., and OYLER, G. March 17, 1959 (March 17, 1958] No. 8443/58. Class 20(4) In a sliding expansion joint between a first structural member 12 and an elongated structural member 18, the members 12 have a platform 15 attached thereto upon which one end of the member 18 is slidably supported and inter-engaging projections and slots 17, 19 are associated with the platform 15 and supported end of the member 18 to limit sliding movement of the member 18 to a direction parallel to its longitudinal axis. In one embodiment the projections 17 are metal pins upstanding from the platform 15 and the slots are formed in the member 18 and are provided with metal linings 20. The face of the member 18 resting on the platform 15 has a metal lining 24. The platform 15 is of mild steel and is supported by a gusset plate 16 united to the central reinforcement 13 of the member 12. The gusset plate 16 engages a slot 23 in the member 18. A layer of bitumastic material is interposed between the end face of the member 18 and the member 12. Graphite grease is placed between the upper face of the platform 15 and the member 18 to reduce sliding friction. A beam 26 located on the platform 15 may be grouted into a recess 27 in the member 12 on the side opposite the member 18. A precast concrete floor may be laid ,over the members 18, 26. In an alternative arrangement the pins may project downwardly from the member 18 to engage slots in the platform 15. The reinforcement 13 of the member 12 is filled with grouting.
