847,251. Friction clutches. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1957 [Feb. 20, 1956], No. 5182/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XVI] A variable line-spacing clutch, for driving the platen 2 of a typewriter, adding, accounting or other office machine, comprises a resilient split-ring operated by a cam pivotallymounted on the inner clutch member which either expands the ring into clutching engagement or allows it to contract out of engagement with an outer clutch member. The platen 2 is carried by a hub 8 secured to a cap member 10 which has a reduced diameter 23 freely encircled by a split-ring 26 and a ratchetwheel 3. A tubular member 16, fixed to the cap member 10, has a knob 18 secured thereto by means of a sleeve 17, for manual operation of the platen. A cam 25 acting on the ends of the split-ring 26, has a pivot member 24 with rectangular portions fitting rectangular openings in a lever 31 which extends through bores in the member 10 and the hub 8. Fixed to the cap 10 is a bracket 33 which also extends through the hole in the member 8 and carries a pulley 35 at its outer end. A chain 36, connected to the free end of the lever 31, extends over the pulley 35 and a spool-shaped centre portion 37 of the pivot member 24, and is connected to an axially-slidable button 20 in the knob 18, which is urged to the left by a spring 38 to tension the chain and engage the split-ring 26 with the inner surface of the ratchet-wheel 3 through the lever 31 and the cam 25. Pressure on the button 20 removes the tension on the chain and permits the split-ring 26 to contract free of the ratchetwheel.
