Abstract
847,228. Granulating metals. MARVALAUD Inc. Nov. 20, 1956, No. 35421/56. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXII] A method of casting solid metal filaments or powder consists in projecting a stream of molten metal on to a rotating, smooth, concave mould chill surface 5, and controlling the speed of projection and speed of rotation so that the metal remains on the surface for less than one revolution. The metal may be tin, lead, cadmium, indium, zinc, bismuth, aluminium, magnesium, copper or other non-refractory metal or alloy. It is supplied to a transversely-adjustable nozzle 7 from a container 12, and is forced through the nozzle by pressure from a line 11. The size of the filament is controlled by the size of the nozzle 7, the speed of the mould-rotating motor 6 and the velocity and temperature of the molten metal at the nozzle. Movement of the nozzle during casting produces a filament of varying thickness. The chill block may be of brass, aluminium or steel, and the nozzle be of glass, steel, molybdenum, or silicon carbide. A number of spaced nozzles may be used to produce several filaments simultaneously. It is stated that the mould 4 may be a cylinder, cone or belt, and that external cooling means therefore may be provided.
