A machine for rectifying the length of the straight branches between the curved portions of a tubular serpentine superheater includes a table having an adjustable stop thereon against which the curved portion at the end of a straight branch is placed, a unit adapted to engage the curved portion at the other end of the branch, means for moving said unit to effect re-shaping of the latter curved portion, one pair of jaws to clamp one straight branch, another pair of jaws to serve as a guide for the adjacent straight branch and means to open and close the jaws. In operation, a pipe unit b is placed on a table a with a bend e abutting an adjustable stop c, jaws o1, o2 are then closed by toggle means k2, operated by a jack q, to clamp a rectilinear limb f, extending between the bend e and a bend g, and jaws r1, r2 are closed by toggle means k1 operated by a jack q1 to close and form a guide for the other rectilinear limb h extending from the bend g. Portions n1, n2 adjacent the bend g and the inner or outer arc of the bend are heated and a member i is moved by toggle means l operated by a jack either to move in the direction F to press the bend g or in the direction F1 to pull the bend, by a hook u, whichever is necessary to cause the bend to become tangential to the line B-B, the limb h being allowed to slide in the jaws r1 r2 accordingly. Other bends are likewise rectified. One arm of the toggle l bears against a stop m adjustable so that the stroke of the member i may be predetermined according to the degree of rectification necessary. Saws x1 x2 cut the ends w1, w2 of the rectified pipe unit b so that the outer limbs thereof are the correct length. Means to prepare the ends w1, w2 for welding may be mounted on the table a.
