Gear-gauging apparatus comprises a pair of master gears 34, 40 with their axes parallel and spaced so that both master gears mesh fully even with undersized work-gears passing therebetween, and means 53 for advancing a work-gear in the direction of its axis to a position in which its teeth enter to a substantial depth into the tooth spaces of both the master gears. One master gear 34 pivots on a lever 30, 32 about an axis 24 but does not revolve about its own axis; the other master gear 40 is rotated about its own axis by a rack and pinion 46, 44, the rack 46 being pneumatically operated by air applied to a cylinder 52. The workgears are fed along a shoot 53 by a vibrating feed device 54, the vibration ensuring that their teeth do mesh with the master gears 34, 40. When the gear is in position for gauging, it engages a pin 56 which actuates a switch LS7, the circuit then set up operating a solenoid which controls the supply of air to the cylinder 52, thus rotating the master gear 40 anticlockwise to pass the work-gear between the master gears. As the gear passes between them the master gear 34 pivots about the axis 24, and the arm 30 operates one or more limit switches LS1, LS2, LS3, according to the size of the workpiece. If the gear is within the required tolerance, it rolls over a surface 100, formed on a gate 88, and down into a shoot 82. Oversize gears are directed into a shoot 80, the gate 88 pivoting clockwise, and undersize gears fall into a shoot 84, a trap door 102 in the shoot 82 being opened in this case. The above operation is automatic and a circuit is described (not shown) which will perform this. A dial gauge 150 is used for adjusting the contacts of the switches LS1, LS2, LS3 prior to automatic gauging.
