Abstract
Metal articles such as flat sheets or openended cans to be coated or lacquered in succession are moved in a predetermined path and are subjected over their whole surface, as <PICT:0846728/III/1> an immediate preliminary to the coating process, to treatment with a flame which is directed except when an article is presented for treatment. As shown, tinplate sheets delivered in succession from a stack by a belt conveyer 1 on to a second conveyer 2 pass during transfer through a flame 6 issuing from a transverse line of downwardly and forwardly directed nozzles 5 mounted on a manifold 4. The sheets then pass for lacquering to a third conveyer 3 beneath hot air nozzles 17 in a manifold 16 connected by a pipe 15 with a blower 14. In the intervals between the delivery of successive sheets the flame 6 is deflected from the conveyer 2 by hot-air jets issuing from a perforated pipe 9, the air being delivered to the pipe through a helical copper tube 11 heated by the deflected flame. The air jets serve also to heat the underside of the sheets during flaming. One or more rollers 7 guide the tail ends of the sheets. The conveyers 1, 2 may be on the same level, the conveyer 2 being perforated or of wire mesh to permit delivery of the hot air therethrough.
