Abstract
898,042. Bending and tempering glass sheets. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. May 11, 1960 [May 18, 1959], No. 16595/60. Class 56. In the bending of glass sheets 11 having a substantially flat main portion 60 and an end portion 62 bent about an axis 64-64 oblique to the longitudinal axis of its main portion, the unbent sheet 11 is supported in bending relation to a shaping surface 34, 38, conveyed along a linear path 56 of movement through a hot atmosphere in zone 18 to soften the glass, force is applied to the softened sheet to help conform the sheet to the surface 34, 38, the glass sheet 11 being originally supported in a horizontal plane and oriented during the bending step so that its oblique bending axis 64-64 is parallel to the linear path 56 of movement. The bending mould 32, 36 with surfaces 34, 38 is mounted by means of saddles 33 which rest loosely on diagonal support rails 15 forming part of a carriage 14 which has runners 26 riding on stub rollers 16 for conveyance through the bending furnace 18, a tempering station 20 and cooling and unloading stations 22, 24. The bending mould parts 32, 36 are connected by hinges 40 and the upward force to move end part 36 is provided by counterweight lever arms 42 pivotable about hinges 40 to a stop 43. The end part 62 is given a generally conical curve thereby. The glass is located by spaced fingers 37 and end and side stops 44, 47. Upper and lower heaters 28 (not shown), 30 are provided to radiate heat on to the glass sheets in a non-uniform pattern transversely of the path 56 and at least one overhead heater 29 (not shown) and bottom heater 31 is energized more than the remaining heaters to give a line of maximum heat along the line of the oblique axis 64-64. The sheets 11 are similarly orientated through the tempering station 20 at which the surfaces are exposed to opposing blasts of tempering fluid from orifices in nozzle members 48, 52 flanked by pivotable wing boxes 50, 54 which are positioned to give an elliptical crosssectional space 58.
