Abstract

846,669. Moulding optical elements. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. March 11, 1959, No. 8492/59. Class 87(2). A mould for forming lenses comprises mould halves 14, 15 supported by surfaces 12, 13, respectively, of a cylindrical support 10, the moulding surface of the half 15 having the curvature desired of one side of the lens, and the moulding surface of the half 14 having a central portion 17 of the desired spherical curvature of the other side of the lens and an outer portion 19 of different curvature to form an outwardly tapering space with the adjacent surface portion of the half 15. The lower half 14 is drawn upwardly on shrinkage of the moulding material during the moulding operation, the tapering space allowing the peripheral portion of the material to flow freely inwardly. The mould may be used for forming lenses of polycyclohexyl or polymethylmethacrylate, polystyrene, polyallyl di-glycol carbonate, or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and allyl di-glycol carbonate, which are placed in the mould in a liquid state and are heated to complete their polymerization.
