Abstract

846,642. Door closure sealing. BOLT BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. Sept. 25, 1958 [March 20, 1958], No. 30692/58. Class 20(3) In a peripherally gasketed door, the sealing gasket between the edge of the door and the frame is moved outwards of the door or leaf when closed against the frame by pressure feet moving parallel to the plane of the door by part of energy stored when the door is opened and another part of the stored energy moves the gasket inwardly on the commencement of opening the door. As shown a rubber tubular gasket 38 is secured e.g. by cement, to the bottom of a groove 39 Fig. 2, in the hinge stile 4 and along the outer edges of a foot 34 on the right hand knob side of the door and which is almost the full height of the door, top (not shown) and bottom pressure feet 33, almost the full width of the door and two left hand top and bottom feet 32, which are short and rotate through small angles about pivots 35. A small stop.pin 36 on the front panel 1 of the door limits the movement of the foot 32 by contacting the end of a slot 37. The gasket is secured to the members to within about three inches of the comers of the seal, as indicated by the gasket out from the groove 39 in the lower left hand comer of Fig. 2. On turning the knob 48, Fig. 1, anticlockwise to withdraw the bolt 42 the bolt extension 46 pivoted to a crank 47 on the panel 1 causes the crank to rotate and press down an arm 58 carrying a trip stop 61 which .releases the toggle 20 as shown in Fig..2, thus allowing the arm 15 pivoted at 17 to move forward to the stop 22 on the panel 1 under the force of spring 18, which force is then exerted against stop 22 and is released from the main link rods 21, pivoted to the toggle 20 and these rods move freely as the vertical rods 24, 25 coupled to the upper and lower feet 33, are drawn together by spring 27 and by the compressive force between the seal 38 and door frame. The movement of the vertical rods 24, 25 pulls the pressure feet 33 and 34 inwardly against stops 41, the movement of foot 34 being directed by roller 64 in slot 35 horizontally and that of feet 33, vertically by roller 62 in slot 63. The pressure feet 32 are brought against stops 36. As the door is swung open, a cam rod 9 attached to a portion of the lower hinge 8 and located in a hole 66 through the stile 7 and panel 1, moves to the left moving a cam 10 to which it is coupled, counterclockwise about its pivot 11 on the panel 1 to contact and force a roller 12 upwardly to expand the toggle 13, its right hand end 14 being fixed, the toggle thereby turning arm 15 to extend the spring 18 and store up energy therein. Toggle 20 consequently expands and is urged.upwards by spring 23. Continued opening of the door results in toggle 13 passing its dead centre and locking against the stop 16 and toggle 20 being brought to its fully locked position by spring 23. The bolt 42 is held within the door by an interlock. As the door is closed, a pin on the frame releases the interlock and the bolt is free to move to the right into its locking position on turning of the knob, causing the crank 47 aided by spring 60 to rotate in a clockwise direction pulling up arm 58 and causing arm 59 to rotate clockwise to break toggle 13 and energy stored in spring 18 moves arm 15 counterclockwise and forces toggle 20 to the left, transferring part of the stored energy to spring 27, to be used later in releasing the seal. The pressure feet 32, 33 and 34 force the gasket 38 into intimate contact with the door jamb through the action of the corner brackets 29 moving down and to the right or left through the action of link rods 28. The vertical motion is conveyed to the foot 33 through two rollers 30 moving in slots 31 in the pressure foot. The horizontal motion of the right corner bracket 29 is conveyed to pressure foot 34 similarly by rollers and slots 30, 31. The motion of the left hand bracket 29 is conveyed to the pressure feet 32 in a similar manner.
