An electric control system for governing the supply of power to a load 1 the impedance of which changes from a low value to a high value as a result of current flow therein, for example the heaters of thermionic valves, the load 1 being connected by way of a voltage regulator 19 to a first supply 11 of voltage which has a value substantially less than the normal rated input voltage and subsequently to a second source 13 which has a value equal to the normal input voltage. The change-over from source 11 to source 13 is under the control of a device 29 which imparts a predetermined time interval to the change-over operation by way of a relay CR. The voltage regulator 19 is of a kind which, when the voltage input thereto is from the source 13, will regulate for constant output volts when the load current is between zero and full load value but which, should the load current exceed full load value will cause the output voltage to drop sharply to zero (see curve EIa in Fig. 2). The corresponding regulator curve when the input to the regulator is from the lower voltage source 11 is designated EIb. Thus by first connecting the load to a lowvoltage supply the current inrush to the load while it has low impedance is limited.
