846,281. Radioactive capsules ; handling radioactive materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 11, 1957 [Nov. 20, 1956], No. 35436/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A solution of a radioactive salt is evaporated to dryness in a funnel sealed by a fusible plug and the funnel is then heated at a higher temperature to fuse the plug and the salt so that the salt enters a capsule. Radioactive caesium sulphate may be introduced into a platinum capsule using a funnel having a plug of gold foil. The capsule is closed first with a platinum screw plug carrying a braze metal ring and then with a uranium plug ; finally the capsule is heated to melt the braze metal ring and seal the plugs in position. The plugs are screwed in by remote control using a rotatable tool plate, the capsule being supported on a rotatable chuck. The capsule provides a source of gamma rays for teletherapeutic use.
