In a key-set-and-operated cash register, a member is provided to arrest any operated key levers before the completion of their operative and return movement, thereby indicating to the operator which keys were operated, and release means are manually operable to permit the completion of the movement. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a pawl 20 engages over one of the arms 15 carrying the key-coupler bar 14 to prevent its full restoration, and a release key 26 or push-button withdraws the pawl to an ineffective position. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the key-coupler bar is arrested during its downward movement by a pawl 201 and depression of the release key 26 first, by its end 33, cams the pawl 20<SP>1</SP> to an ineffective position and then, whilst maintaining the pawl ineffective, engages the keycoupler bar 14 to complete its movement. A pawl 31 and notched plate 30 ensure a full stroke. Alternatively, a push-button may render the pawl 20<SP>1</SP> ineffective and may be latched down until the keys are fully depressed. The release of the partially depressed keys may be effected by closure of a cash drawer instead of by a special key.
