In an arrangement in printing registers for listing, calculating, book-keeping and like machines, in which each order mechanism has a. hammer, for a vertical typebar, which can be locked, against the action of resilient means, in a starting position from which it is releasable for movement, by the resilient means, to make an impression, by an individual locking device, each locking device having a latch 7 which locks the associated hammer when the associated type bar indicates a value other than zero, and a locking lug 10, 11, 14 which, for interlock, overlaps a portion of another order mechanism to maintain the hammer associated with the lug in the starting position when the hammer of the second mechanism is maintained in the starting position, the overlapped portion 12 in' at least one order, or the lug overlapping that portion and associated with at least one other order, being movably arranged and displaceable to permit cancellation of the interlock, each hammer has an upwardly directed arm which, when the hammer is not locked, can be moved by the resilient means to a position in which the hammer is inoperative, the movable locking lug or overlapped portion is arranged on an upwardly directed arm, the latches 7 engage with other arms 5 on the hammers, and the movable locking lug or portion has an operating arm 21 projecting away from the platen at a higher level than the arm 5 of its hammer. In the construction shown, printing hammers 1-4 type, respectively, pence, unit shillings, tens shillings and pounds. Lug 10 on hammer 1 overlaps hammer 2. Lug 11 on hammer 2 extends past hammer 3 and overlaps a portion 12 of member 13 which is movable on hammer 4, pins 15, 16 engaging in slots 17, 18, urged upwardly by spring 19, and moved downwardly through projection 21 by a key-operated lever &c. Lug 14 on hammer 4 overlaps the next hammer. Hammer 3 has no lug and is therefore always swung into inoperative position when the associated type bar does not indicate a " 1 " (ten shillings). When member 13 is positioned as shown, so that portion 12 is engaged by lug 11, and a type bar of one hammer indicates a digit other than zero, all the hammers, except hammer 3, to the right of that hammer, even though their type bars indicate zeros, will be prevented from swinging to inoperative position by lugs 10, 11, 14. Hammers to the left of the highest order where a digit other than zero is indicated will be swung to inoperative position, so that no printing takes place to the left of that digit, but digits including zeros are printed to the right thereof. If projection 21 is depressed so that portion 12 cannot be engaged by lug 11, hammers 1-3 will swing to inoperative positions if they indicate zeros.
