Abstract

845,677. Automatic voltage control systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956], No. 33872/57. Class 38 (4). The output voltage of a D.C. generator, or it is stated, an A.C. generator or a saturable reactor stabilizer is maintained constant by using a transistor to switch the D.C. field (or control) current " on " or " off " in response to changes in output voltage. The transistor TR2 is in series with the field 20 of a selfexcited D.C. generator 22, and is controlled by a common-emitter driver transistor TR1. The base/emitter circuit of TR1 includes a Zener diode 28 and a portion of a potential divider R1, R2, R3 which is connected across the output of the generator 22. When the output voltage of the generator is low, diode 28 has a high resistance, transistor TR1 does not conduct, and transistor TR2 is fully conductive due to base current through resistor R5. When the output voltage rises, diode 28 passes Zener current, transistor TR1 conducts, thereby reducing the base current of transistor TR2 which becomes substantially non-conducting. The transition is assisted by positive feedback from the emitter of TR2 through resistor R4 to the base of TR1 and by transient feedback through capacitor 46. The emitter of TR2 is biased by a potential divider R6, R7 so that when the base current is reduced the emitter voltage is equal to the collector voltage in order to ensure complete cut-off. The diode 48 shunts the field 20 to reduce switching surges. Specifications 787,610 and 814,051 are referred to.
