Abstract

843,591. Transistor circuits. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1958 [Jan. 6, 1958; Aug. 22, 1958], No. 41461/58. Class 40(6). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] In a voltage regulator for a generator (see Group XXXV), a bi-stable pair of transistors with a common emitter resistor are switched according to whether the control voltage is above or below the break-down voltage of a Zener diode. A control transistor 42 and the paralleled power transistors 18, 20 form the pair and switch the current supplied to the generator field 12 in accordance with the voltage tapped off a potential divider 54. When the voltage is high enough for the Zener diode 49 to conduct, transistor 42 conducts and the transistors 18, 20 are cut-off by the emitter bias voltage obtained across a silicon diode 32. This voltage drop is substantially constant for a range of forward currents. The reduction in current through the common emitter resistor 34 makes the emitter of transistor 42 less negative and hence the transistor becomes more conductive. Transient feedback through capacitor also assists the switching action. When the Zener diode 49 ceased to conduct, transistor 42 cuts off and the transistors 18, 20 become fully conductive.
