Abstract

A composition for backing carpets comprises synthetic or natural rubber in powder, granular, fibrous, or other sub-divided form compounded with an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate or of a copolymer of vinyl acetate containing not less than 50% by weight of vinyl acetate, the composition containing from 0,5 to 5,0 parts by weight polyvinyl acetate or vinyl acetate copolymer per part of rubber. The vinyl acetate can be copolymerized with alkyl maleates or fumarates; suitable are octyl and butyl maleates, or vinyl benzoate, the copolymer emulsions containing 70 to 85% by weight of vinyl acetate of the total resin solids in the emulsions. The emulsions, which may contain plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate or alkyl sebacates, may be combined with a polyterpene emulsion before compounding with the rubber and any fillers or extenders therefor, e.g. starch, whiting, and cork. Wetting agents, thickeners and pigments may also be added.
