In an arrangement for clamping a television signal to a reference level during periods when a desired signal is present (e.g. during the occurrence of the colour burst in the NTSC colour signal) the clamping is controlled by pulses the repetition rate of which is the same as the frequency of the desired signal. Fig. 1 shows the application of the invention to the NTSC colour signal in a channel extending from video amplifier 1 to an output circuit 10 and including clamp circuits 3, 6 and 8. In accordance with the invention the colour burst is derived via a filter F and supplied via valve V gated on during the occurrence of the burst to a circuit 17 which produces two series of pulses of opposite polarity and these pulses are employed to clamp the burst signals in clamps 3, 6 and 8. When a monochrome television signal is supplied to amplifier 1, the clamp pulses from generator 16 (which gate valve V) are then effective to clamp the normal black level of the signal. The synchronizing signals present in the original television signal may be replaced by signals from a local source by operation of switch S.
