Abstract
845,572. Grinding. AUTOFLOW ENGINEERING Ltd. March 18, 1958 [March 20, 1957], No. 9084/57. Class 60. A machine, such as for grinding the V-shaped edge portions of opthalmic and other lenses, comprises a rough-grinding wheel 17 and a finegrinding wheel 28 which are of different diameter and situated adjacent each other and adapted to be driven at different speeds, the centres of the wheels. being laterally offset so that portions of the peripheries of the wheels are substantially in a common tangential plane. The rough-grinding wheel, which may be a diamond wheel, is mounted on one end of a shaft 16 carried in a bearing pedestal 15 secured to a base 11, the other end of the shaft being connected by a V-belt 36 and pulleys 18, 38 to one end of the shaft 40 of an electric motor 12 ; the shaft 16 is provided with thrust bearings 21, 22 and an oil seal 27. The other end of the shaft of the electric motor is connected by a round belt 37 and pulleys 35, 39 to a shaft 32 mounted in a second bearing pedestal 33 and having secured thereto the fine-grinding wheel 28 which may be of carborundum. The adjacent sides of the wheels are recessed to receive the nuts securing them to their respective shafts to permit the wheels to be closely spaced from each other, and the portions of the peripheries of the wheels, being in a common tangential plane, enables both grinding operations to be carried out with one movement by an operator. A clutch may be inserted in the drive to either or both grinding wheels. The wheels are provided with guard and a flow of water controlled by a tap device.
