Abstract

An aqueous solution or dispersion consisting of polyacrylic acid, water, and 0,25-6% by weight of a hexavalent chronium compound (calculated as CrO3) is used to form a coating on a metal surface or phosphate-coated surface (see Group II). The polyacrylic acid, which preferably amounts to 0,5-4% by weight of the water, may be partially or completely neutralised with ammonia. Solutions containing chromic acid may be similarly neutralised. Other hexavalent chromium compounds which may be used are the dichromates of aluminium, cadmium, chromium, magnesium, manganese and strontium. The coating may be dried and rendered insoluble by heating.ALSO:A chromium-containing coating is formed on a metal surface or phosphate-coated surface by applying to the surface a film of an aqueous solution or dispersion consisting of polyacrylic acid, water, and 0.25-6% by weight of a hexavalent chromium compound (calculated as CrO3), drying the film and rendering the dried film insoluble by heating. The polyacrylic acid, which preferably amounts to 0.5-4% by weight of the water, may be partially or completely neutralised with ammonia. Solutions containing chromic acid may be similarly neutralised. Other hexavalent chromium compounds which may be used are the dichromates of aluminium, cadmium, chromium, magnesium, manganese and strontium. The film may be dried at room temperature and then heated at 200 DEG -500 DEG F. to render it insoluble; if the dried film is painted, the subsequent heating serves also to bake the paint. Alternatively, the film is both dried and rendered insoluble by heating. Metals which may be coated are iron, steel, zinc, copper, brass and aluminium.ALSO:A chromium-containing coating is formed on a metal surface or phosphate-coated surface by applying to the surface a film of an aqueous solution or dispersion consisting of polyacrylic acid, water, and 0.25-6% by weight of a hexavalent chromium compound (calculated as CrO3), drying the film and rendering the dried film insoluble by heating.
