[Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic system for a circuit-breaker 3A comprises an hydraulic jack 1 which is controlled by two similar hydraulic devices 15, 15A having differential pistons 23 arranged to be actuated rapidly by graduated exhausts of pressure effected by associated control valves 14, 14A which are also similar to one another. The differential piston 23 of the device 15 is spring- urged upwardly to close an orifice 25 in a widebored pipe 30 connected by a non-return valve 29 to a chamber 27 in the device 15A, in turn, connected by a pipe 5 to the jack 1. The lower end of the device 15 is connected to a pump 10 by the control valve 14 which has a chamber 16 closed at each end by spring-pressed balls 18, 19 and a sleeve 21 normally urged to the left by a spring 22. In operation, the pump 10 supplies liquid pressure to the valve 14 to move the sleeve 21 to the right to supply liquid through an orifice to the chamber 16 and to the lower end of the piston 23 of the device 15, and through passageways f1, f2 to a chamber 27 connected to the accumulator 6. When the pressure reaches a predetermined value in the accumulator, the pump is stopped by a manometer and the sleeve 21 returned to the left by the spring 22. The circuit breaker 3A is closed by energization of a solenoid 40 which displaces the ball 18 from its seating to connect the chamber 16 to exhaust 17, the decrease in pressure in the chamber permitting downward movement of the piston 23 in the device 15 and the liquid beneath the piston to displace the ball 19 from its seating and pass to the control valve 14A to assist in pressing its balls 18, 19 against their seatings. The downward movement of the piston 23 closes an orifice 26 at the lower end of the device 15 and opens the orifice 25 to connect the pressure in the accumulator to the jack to move the piston upwardly and close the breaker. When a position of equilibrium is reached, the ball 18 of the valve 14 is returned to its seating and the orifice 25 closed by upward movement of the piston 23, any leakage of pressure from the pipe 30 and jack 1 being replaced by the accumulator through a balance valve 31. The breaker is opened by energization of a solenoid 41 causing similar action to the valve 14A and device 15A to open the chamber 16 in the valve and the orifice 25 in the device to connect the jack to exhaust, a spring 4 assisting in the movement of the piston 2 of the jack. The pipe 30 is also connected to a low-pressure valve 35 which, if the pressure in the pipe or jack falls to a predetermined low level, connects the pipe to exhaust to permit rapid downward movement of the piston.
