843,990. Filters. PARMATIC ENGINEERING Ltd. May 6, 1958, No. 14397/58. Class 46. A hollow, cylindrical filter element 59. Fig. 2, has at its upper end an outlet fitting 64 including an outlet bushing 66. The element is held in a bowl 11 by a retaining ring 68, three balls 70 in the ring engaging corresponding recesses 75 in the bowl. During screwing-home of the bowl, the bushing 66 enters the actuating ring 44 of a rotary valve 34, and the retaining ring 68 slides around the actuating ring 44 until three inwardly-directed spring-pressed balls 71 engage corresponding recesses 46, Fig. 7, in the actuating-ring 44, whereupon the valve 34 is rotated clockwise from the position of Fig. 7 through 90 degrees to bring inlet opening 37 and outlet opening 40 in the valve into register with inlet passage 29 and outlet passage 30 respectively in the head 10. When a pin 78 (not shown) extending radially from the upper rim 35, Fig. 7, of the valve 34 reaches a vertical stop-pin 79, Figs 2 and 7, the valve is stopped (at the end of its 90 degrees travel) and balls 71 are urged, by the continued rotation of the bowl, out of recesses 46. When the bowl is unscrewed for removal the reverse process takes place. The unit is intended for oil filtration, and to have a burst pressure of 6,000 p.s.i. A steel tension sleeve 84 is shrunk around the aluminium socket part 25, and screw threads 76, 77 are specially designed for this purpose. A tappet by-pass valve 18 is provided.
