Abstract

843,971. Gun installations. HAWKER AIRCRAFT Ltd. Nov. 6, 1958 [Dec. 23, 1957], No. 39937/57. Class 92 Relates to a gun installation comprising a self-contained unit adapted for mounting externally of a craft, e.g. a tank, road vehicle, marine craft, or, as described, an aircraft. According to the invention the unit is provided with means for storage and feeding ammunition comprising a shoot spirally located within the casing of the unit around the gun. As shown the unit is suspended from a pylon sole plate 1 Fig. 1 beneath the wing of an aircraft and includes a casing 2 comprising a detachable nose portion 3, a central portion containing the gun 14 and a tail portion 4 including two compartments 5, 6 for receiving respectively the links 7 of the ammunition feed belt and the empty cartridge cases 8. The unit is secured to the plate 1 by a main support beam 11 Figs 1, 2 from which a pair of gun-mounting beams 15 is supported by a universal pivotal mounting 16 and an assembly 17 which permits the beams to be adjusted in elevation and training for harmonizing the units. The body of the gun (e.g. a 30 m/m Aden gun) is slidably associated with the beams 15 and is provided with a supply of belted ammunition of the disintegrating link type. The ammunition is stored and fed into the gun through a shoot in the centre portion of the unit, the inner surface of the casing being provided with spiral ammunition guides 21 while the inner surface of the shoot takes the form of a freely rotatable drum 22 which surrounds the gun and beams 15. A fixed shoot 28, 29 Fig. 5 carries the ammunition from the spiral shoot to the gun feed mechanism. The links of the belt are ejected from the gun through a link shoot 34 of substantially spiral shape, the links falling into compartment 5. The spent cases 8 are discharged through a case shoot 37 Fig. 1 into the detachable tail portion 4 of the unit.
