Abstract

843,826. Injection-moulding machines. KREBS, K. Feb. 18, 1957 [Feb. 18, 1956], No. 5502/57. Class 87(2). An injection-moulding machine of the type having a tapered sprue connected to the mould cavity by a "needle-fine" gate so that the sprue remains in the mould and not on the moulded article, is characterised by the provision of an undercut in the nozzle to ensure the withdrawal of the sprue, with the nozzle, from the mould and by an ejector operable, on withdrawal of the injection nozzle, to pass between the nozzle and the mould to shear the sprue and to close the nozzle during the non-injection period. A divided mould 11, 12 for making an article 13, has a sprue opening with a gate 19 for the injection of plastic material by a cylinder 20 and nozzle 14 having an annular undercut recess 14a, the cylinder 20 and nozzle 14 being longitudinally movable in a frame 10 provided with an ejector 16 with an air passage 17. After moulding of the article 13, the mould is opened and the article removed whilst at the same time the nozzle withdraws, taking with it the sprue, the ejector 16 descends shearing the sprue from the nozzle whilst compressed air from the passage 17 blows the sprue clear of the machine and the ejector 16 closes the outlet of the nozzle. The mould is then closed, the ejector withdrawn, and the nozzle advanced for the next insulating. Safety devices may be provided to prevent operation if the ejector does not fully advance or retract. The ejector may be positioned in the mould and its action may be rotary or "rockable".
