Abstract

843,547. Removing metal by spark erosion. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. Aug. 16, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 25027/56. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXV] To maintain a substantially constant sparkgap length in spark-machining apparatus of the kind wherein a condenser C1, charged from a D.C. source over a resistor R1, discharges over a gap between the work w and an electrode t which is adjustable relatively to the work by a reversible motor m, the motor has a low resistance control winding connected between a point in the discharge circuit at which appears a sawtooth voltage and a point on the supply side of the resistor R1 at which the average voltage approximates to the average voltage at the connection point in the discharge circuit when the gap is of the required length. The circuit completed through these connections must have a sufficiently low D.C. resistance to limit overrun of the motor. The motor is connected to the movable electrode through gearing of high velocity ratio. In the arrangement shown, motor m is connected between the upper end of condenser C1 and a centre tapping b3 of the secondary winding of a transformer T1 which supplies the charging circuit over rectifier bridge w1-w4. A choke L2 smooths the motor current. The motor may have a permanent magnet field, or a field winding f which is excited from the rectifier bridge. Specifications 843,546 and 843,548 are referred to.
