Abstract

843,328. Hydraulic presses. NATIONAL AUTOMATIC TOOL CO. Inc. Aug. 1, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 24880/58. Class 69 (2). A ram 12 of a moulding machine is advanced rapidly by supplying liquid from a pump 42 through a valve 56 to a booster cylinder 15 formed in the ram. A pilot pump 44 supplies liquid through a valve 58 to a valve chamber 23 to unseat a valve 26 from a seat 28 so that liquid from a reservoir 46 supplies oil to the ram cylinder at the rear of the ram. Towards the end of the advance stroke a dog 72 on the ram actuates a switch LS-2 which actuates valve 58 so that valve chamber 23 is opened to exhaust and the valve 26 seated by a spring 30. The valve stem 24 uncovers ports 32 so that pump 42 in addition to supplying the booster cylinder supplies to the main ram cylinder 10, to give a slower speed. This prevents harmful impacts between the moulds and gives full clamping force. When dog 72 actuates a switch LS-3, valve 58 is actuated and valve 56 reversed so that liquid is supplied to a pull-back area 34 of the ram which is retracted rapidly. At the end of the return stroke a switch LS-1 is opened to stop the operation.
