Abstract

843,096. Centrifugal clutches. NEWTON & BENNETT Ltd. Sept. 13, 1956 [May 5, 1956], No. 13987/56. Divided out of 843,095. Class 80(2). In a centrifugal friction clutch of the type described in Specification 843,095 means are provided to lock out the self-withdrawing action of the clutch. Operation of withdrawal levers 28 with the clutch stationary moves the collars 35 away from the fulcrums 176 and allows light springs (not shown) to move the plates 17a inwards, release of the withdrawal levers 28 then engages the clutch for towedstarts. In another embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5, the centrifugal weight 72 is circular and housed within a cylindrical aperture in the flywheel 70. The weight lever 75 is a flanged pressing and retains a fulcrum cup 78 having fulcrum humps 80 each side of an aperture 79. The aperture contains clutch withdrawal studs 82 having collars 83 with projections 83a complementary to the humps 80. The studs 82 are rocked radially inwards in relation to the clutch by springs 81c on operation of the withdrawal levers, to engage the clutch for towed-starts. When the engine starts the weights 72 move the humps 80 and allow the centrifugal face on the studs 82 to act against the weak springs 81c and restore the studs to their normal position when the humps 80 and projections 83a can engage.
