Abstract

843,091. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 19, 1950 [Sept. 22, 1949], No. 24334/49. Class 39(4). A fuel element comprises a bunch of wires each consisting of a fissile bearing substance coated with a metal. Plutonium wires 1 coated with silver 3 are assembled as a wire cable, swaged to eliminate voids, and enclosed in a tubular stainless steel sheath 2. Alternatively, the strands 1 may be of uranium enriched in isotope 233 or 235 the coating 3 of copper and the sheath 2 of nickel. The assembly of wires may be given an overall metal plating in place of the sheath. Thermal contact between the wires and the sheath may be obtained by the use of a readily fusible metal. Specification 826,931 is referred to.
