Abstract

843,060. Detecting leaks in vacuum systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 2, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 17518/58. Class 37. In a vacuum system, leaks are detected by observing the current passing through a discharge device communicating with the system and comprising a heated anode 14. Such current is markedly increased on the entry through any leak of dichlorodifluoromethane or other halogencontaining gas. To improve the steadiness of the meter a small amount of air is admitted to the vacuum system. To prevent a gradual loss of sensitivity, the pressure is kept above one micron but less than 200 microns. As shown a chamber is evacuated by mechanical pumps 5 and then by diffusion pumps 3 and air is admitted at 23. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), separate valves with filters are provided for the admission of air to the chamber and to the discharge tube. Specifications 648,367 and 842,897 are referred to.
