Abstract
842,468. Stereotype casting apparatus. FUNDITOR Ltd., and SPITTLE, W. R. April 10, 1958 [Aug. 13, 1957], No. 25549/57. Class 100(2) In a stereotype casting machine of type comprising two separable platens 6, 7 between which the type metal is cast when the platens are in a near vertical position, the platen 6 is fixed and the platen 7 is supported by means which enable it to be moved between a near vertical operative position and a horizontal position. The fixed platen 6 is attached to a frame 9 above which is disposed a melting pot 2. The platen 7 is pivoted at 10 to a member 11 provided with rollers 12 which slide along a horizontal or slightly inclined track 13. Also pivoted to the platen 7 is one end of an arm 17 the other end of which is connected by a lost-motion pin and slot connection to fixed frame member 21. The pivot 10 is arranged slightly above the centre of gravity of the platen 7 and a handle 24 is provided on the member 11. A clamp 26 is provided for securing the two platens together. After casting the clamp 26 is released and the handle 24 drawn rearwardly. For the first part of the movement the platen 7 moves parallel to the platen until the lost motion in the connection between the arm 17 and frame member 21 is taken up. Thereafter the arm 17 acts to pivot the platen 7 about the pivot 10 into a horizontal position against a stop 23. A retaining spring- loaded catch 25 is provided. Return movement is effected by the handle 24 and swinging of the platen 7 is assisted by gravity, and also, if desired, by providing a track 13 slightly inclined downwards towards the platen 6, until the platen engages a stop 22.
