Abstract
842,442. Transmission systems for submarine cables. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Sept. 18, 1956 [Sept. 21, 1955], No. 27028/55. Class 40 (4). A telegraph cable is provided with a submerged repeater and modulator for converting the incoming D.C. telegraph signals into audiofrequency signals for transmission where the water is shallow and the signals are liable to lowfrequency interference due e.g. to atmospherics, power supply systems or other telegraphic cables converging in that area. As shown, the submerged cable 1 feeds an equalizer 3a, followed by a D.C. amplifier 3, a modulator 4, a band-pass filter 5 and an audio repeater 6 whose output may feed further submerged repeaters 8. At the shore station filters are provided for separating the incoming audio frequency from the outgoing D.C. supply for the repeaters. The audiofrequency signal is preferably frequency modulated. The modulator and audio amplifiers are preferably transistorized and the D.C. amplifier may be a magnetic amplifier whose supply frequency may be obtained from a transistor oscillator. Switching arrangements (not shown) may be provided to provide a through D.C. connection for transmission in the opposite direction. More than one audio-frequency amplifier may be provided.
