842,185. Brushes. CROTTI, L. Oct. 29, 1957 [Oct. 29, 1956; Oct. 12, 1957], No. 33695/57. Class 19. A rotary brush for use in textile mills &c., comprises a flexible jacket 1, Fig. 1, of synthetic plastic secured on a rigid tube 2 having ends carrying journals 4 by screws 5 and/or adhesive 6. The tufts of nylon, wire &c. bristles are secured in holes 7 in this jacket with plastic cement. If the jacket is sufficiently thick to give the necessary stiffness the inner tube may be dispensed with. In a modification, the jacket is formed by winding a tape 1a, Fig. 2, on the tube and the tufts are secured in the holes by stitching 9. As shown in Fig. 7, the end 3 is welded in the jacket and the journal of carbon or stainless steel is formed with a flange 12 secured in a recess in the end by a nut 13 on a threaded extension of the journal. The brushes may be made by cutting a tube of thermoplastic material into suitable lengths, finish-turning the lengths on a lathe, recessing their ends and forming holes on their curved surfaces for the tufts of bristle. The lengths are then heated in an oven to a temperature of from 60 to 80‹C. to soften their surfaces and placed on the heated mandrel of a brush-making machine and the tufts inserted in the holes in which they are firmly gripped on cooling of the lengths. The ends, also of thermoplastic material, are sealed by welding in the ends of the tube lengths.
