Abstract

842,131. Tuned cavities. MULLARD Ltd. Nov. 26, 1957, No. 36815/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(a)] A cavity for a klystron is tuned by means of a gold-coated slug adapted to be expanded against the wall of a bore in the side of the cavity so as to hold it tightly within the bore. The cavity is subsequently heated whereby a gold diffusion seal is formed between the slug and the bore. The (copper) slug 6 is a sliding fit within a bore in the cylindrical wall 7 of the cavity. The lower part 3 of a central bore within the slug is formed with a tapered thread and the slug is provided with diametrically opposite slots 5 extending from the open end of the bore almost to the closed end. The cavity is tuned by adjustment of the slug, the tuning position of the slug is noted and the slug withdrawn. The inner end of the slug is cut to such a length that, upon insertion, the correct amount of penetration is obtained with the shoulder of an upper enlarged portion 1 of the slug abutting the wall of the cavity. An expanding-screw 8 is screwed into position and the external portions of the slug and screw removed by machining. Heattreatment to form the gold-diffusion seal may be carried out before or after the machining process.
