Abstract

841,992. Nuclear fuel elements. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd., and BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Nov. 22, 1956 [Sept. 16, 1955], No. 26610/55. Class 39(4). A nuclear fuel unit comprises a hollow carrier 1 of graphite with two or more plate-like fuel elements 3 spaced apart. These carriers have slots 2 locating the elements 3 and are of circular or square section. When inserted in a gas-cooled graphite structure to provide a vertical arrangement of elements, the elements are shorter than the carriers, so that they do not support the elements above. Adjacent carriers are arranged so that the fuel elements are parallel (alternatively at right angles) to the elements immediately below. The permanent graphite structure is protected, firstly from deterioration in neutron flux, which is strongest in the hollow member, and secondly from considerable wear when fuel elements are changed.
