Class 89(3) [Also in Group XXIII] A single-stroke, pneumaticnailing-machine comprises a cylinder with a work-engaging- device on the front end, a piston having a normal position, in which it engages a latch, at the rear-end of the cylinder while air-pressure accumulates, and a second position which produces a blow by impact-means carried on the piston and projecting beyond the front-end of the cylinder. As shown, a cylinder 20 has a piston 22 connected to a forwardly-extending piston-rod 23, the end of which engages a latch-mechanism 27 comprising a shaft 92 having a groove 93, and which may be released by a trigger to allow the piston to move past the groove and produce a blow. The nail-holding-device comprises a body-portion 123 slidably mounted in the front of the foot and held in the forwardposition by. a spring 124. A tube 126, from a supply of nails, flairs into a bore 125, the nails being supplied by exhaust-gas from the tool, and held in position by a number of jaws 128 urged inwardly by springs 130. When the nail-holder is pressed against the work, its rearward-parts compress the spring 124, which unlocks the trigger-safety-mechanism, so that on pulling the trigger the shaft 92 rotates and allows the pistonrod to strike the nail. On releasing the nailholder from the work the latch again engages the end of the piston-rod, which has been retracted, and the trigger-locking-mechanism operates to prevent a shot being fired until the nail-holder is again pressed against the work.
