Abstract

841,753. Electromagnetic stirring. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Nov. 11, 1958 [Nov. 16, 1957], No. 36157/58. Class 86 Coils for stirring molten metal electromagnetically are so arranged that the full power of a 2-phase generator may be delivered to either of two sets of coils, or both may be energized simultaneously with reduced power. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the switches 4 enable one or both sets of coils 1a, 1b, 2 to be energized, and the coils are tapped so that part may be shunted when both sets are in use simultaneously. Coils 1a, 1b of each set are connected in series with coil 2 of the other set and each system 1a, 1b, 2 is fed from a separate phase of the generator; this arrangement compensates for any difference in voltage between the two phases. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the coils are untapped. Full power may be applied to one set, or half power to both sets in series by reducing the frequency, e.g. by a Schrage motor, so that the voltage dip over each coil is reduced to half. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the set of coils may be energized at full power or both sets put in parallel by means of switches 5. In this case the frequency is increased in order to obtain maximum stirring power at half current.
