Bags 10 of powdered or granular material are flattened by passing them between a vibrating table 1 and a platen 3, the vibration being in a direction at less than 90 degrees to the table plane and having a component in the direction of movement of the bags to move them along. The platen system has high inertia and may comprise a plate 3 on pivoted arms 4, 5 with adjustable counterweights 8, 9.
