Abstract

841,474. Capacitors. HUNT (CAPACITORS) Ltd., A. H. Sept. 14, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 26450/55. Class 37. A method of making a wound capacitor similar to the type described in Specificaton 841,473 but wherein the backing strip is metallised and undergoes the demetallising process before application of the dielectric coating. An embodiment is shown in radial section in Fig. 5. in which two composite strips are wound together without removal of the baking strip 31. Metallised layers 32, 33 are first applied on opposite faces and adjacent margins 36, 37 are then demetallised. After applying dielectric layers 34, 35 the strips are wound together with demetallised margins on opposite edges so that the backing strips are in the field-free space between electrodes of like polarity. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which a single composite strip is used. The backing strip 38 is first treated as in Fig. 5, and then at least one further metallised layer 43 is applied to each side. By forming demetallised margins 45, 46 on opposite edges of alternate layers, each dielectric layer is sandwiched between electrodes of opposite polarity whilst the backing strip remains in a field-free space. It is stated that the composite strip may be wound so that the backing strip may form part of the dielectric. The invention may be applied to capacitors made by the processes described in Specifications 647,573, 680,843. Specification 841,475 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 736,479.
