Abstract
841,256. Moisture-proof paper &c. DOMENICO, M. DE, and DOMENICO, G. B. R. DE. May 18, 1956, No. 15605/56. Classes 96 and 140. Paper, cardboard, corrugated board, or moulded pulp is made from cellulosic pulp of agave, alfa grass, cane trash, bamboo, seaweed, wood, hemp, rags, mulberry, espartograss, jute, linen, palm, reeds, or sorghum, &c. e.g. with fillers, size, glue, or colours, &c., e.g. for towels, mats, string, rope, filters, cellulose wadding, maps, cheques, bank-notes, decoration, wall papers, cigarettes, &c., is made resistant to dampness, water, &c. (and in consequence to mildew), and given high wet strength by adding to the pulp and/or spraying or soaking the paper, &c. to incorporate e.g. 0.25 to 12% of an N-hydroxy- and/or N- alkoxy-methylated polyurea, e.g. prepared from polyureas of the general formula where A represents one or more cyclic or acyclic hydrocarbon chains, which may carry substituent groups or elements, and if there be two or more, they are linked by sulphur or oxygen, or by nitrogen which may be linked to a radical, e.g. to a carbamyl group or to hydrogen; Z is oxygen or sulphur; n and n<SP>1</SP> are each one or more; R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen, an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, or an hydroxyalkyl group, or may not be present, in which case, the nitrogen atoms concerned will be in a paradiazine chain, and A will represent the remainder of such chain. A condensing catalyst, e.g. ammonium nitrate, sulphate, chloride, or phosphate, or certain mineral or organic acids &c. may be included, and the paper &c. may be heated, e.g. to 120 C., or left at a temperature below 80 C. until polycondensation of the polyurea with the cellulose &c. of the paper occurs. The polyureas may be used in aqueous or other solution, emulsion or dispersion and with condensable materials or condensaton products such as melamine, phenol, urea or thiourea-aldehyde resins or hydroxy methyl amides or polyamides.
