Abstract

Vinyl alkyl ethers are polymerised in the presence of a catalyst obtained by the reaction of (A) at least one metal compound, the metal portion of which is selected from the metals in Group 4A, 5A, 6A, 7A and 8 of the Periodic System with (B) at least one material selected from the metals, metal hydrides, and organs metallic compounds of Group 1A, 2A and 3B of the Periodic System. The vinyl ethers may be vinyl methyl ether, vinyl ether ester, vinyl propyl ether, vinyl isopropyl ether, vinyl isobutyl ether, vinyl 2-ethyl hexyl ether vinyl hytyl ether and vinyl heroyl ether; vinyl alkyl ether may also be used. Polymerisation may be effected in the presence of a solvent such as pentane, hexane, heptane, henzene, dichloranethane, or chlorohenzene or in bulk polymerisation. Temperatures of -100 DEG to +60 DEG C. may be utilised. Many substances in groups (A) and (B) are specified and the following are used in examples:-(A) titanium tetrachloride, titanium tetrabromide, titanium tetraiodide, (B) aluminium trisobutyl, aluminium disobutyl, aluminium triethyl, tetramethylene dilithium and lithium aluminium hydride.
