Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized using a preformed Ziegler catalyst by adding an organo-metallic compound of a Group II metal to the polymerization zone and controlling the pressure conditions to form a polyethylene of required average molecular weight. Specified Ziegler catalyst components are titanium tetrachloride, tetanium trichloride, aluminium diethyl chloride, aluminium triethyl, and aluminium diethyl ethoxide while Group II compounds specified are zinc diethyl (preferred), di-n-propyl, di-iso-propyl, di-iso-butyl, di-iso-amyl, diphenyl and ditolyl. While the polymerization may take place batchwise, continuous polymerization is preferred. Solvents such as isooctane and hydrocarbon distillates may be used. The product may be purified by the addition of an alkanol containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule, e.g. a butanol, and then washing with dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid.
