Abstract
841,092. Moulding battery separators. PRITCHETT & GOLD & E.P.S. CO. Ltd. Jan. 7, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1958], No. 2277/58. Class 87(2). Thermoplastic powder, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, for the formation of battery separators is formed on to a travelling belt in a layer with a ribbed pattern by passage beneath a suitably profiled plate which undergoes vertical vibrations by means which do not disturb the belt or compact the powder. Polyvinyl chloride powder is fed from a hopper 4 on to a stainless steel belt 1 which passes beneath adjustable plates 6 and 7 which successively decrease the thickness of the plane powder layer so that on reaching profiled plate 8 the layer is just higher than the tops of rib-forming slots 9, cut out from said plate. The plate 8 is supported by a frame 11, 12 and vibrated vertically through one twentieth of a millimetre at twenty-five cycles per second by a system of eccentrics 10 connected to each end of plate 8 by members 30. The ends of plate 8 move in vertical slots in a block 32 and plates 6 and 7 are fixed in similar slots by screws 13. Plate 8 may alternatively be vibrated by short mechanical taps. The ribbed layer is subsequently heated to sinter the powder, cooled, wetted, dried, and cut up into individual separators, Fig. 2 (not shown).
