Abstract

<PICT:0840926/III/1> High-temperature high-pressure apparatus comprises a pair of opposed dies, means for exerting pressure against at least one of the dies, a layer of insulation between one of the dies and its associated pressure means, an electrical connection to each of the dies, the opposed outer faces of the dies being recessed to provide a cavity, an electrical and thermal insulating member in contact with each die, a pressure-resisting member adjacent each insulating member, the pressure-resisting members forming a central aperture between the dies adapted to contain an object to be subjected to high-temperature high-pressure conditions, and a layer of insulation between adjacent outer faces of the pressure-resisting members. In Fig. 2 each die is provided with a conical recess in which is positioned a frusto-conical insulating member 24 and pressure-resisting member 25, a layer of insulation 26 being provided between the members 25. A reaction vessel comprising a hollow conductive cylinder 30 surrounded by an insulating cylinder 32 and surmounted by conductive discs 29 is arranged within the central aperture in members 25 and is spaced from the dies by insulating washers 34 surrounded by conductive rims 35. In operation pressure applied to the dies may produce a pressure of over 40,000 atmospheres in the reaction vessel which may be heated simultaneously to a temperature of over 1000 DEG C. by passing an electric current through it. Specification 830,209 is referred to.
