Abstract
Diamonds are produced from graphite using the high pressure high temperature apparatus as shown in Fig. 3. A stacked die arrangement consisting of a pair of major and punch assemblies 61 and 611, a pair of die assemblies 62 and 621 and a double acting punch assembly 63 is positioned in a press apparatus comprising a pair of beds 59 and 591 and two or more support guides 60; one or both beds may be moved along guides 60. Upper end punch assembly 61 is electrically insulated from bed 59 by a layer of insulation 64 adjacent to which is a steel plate 65 which supports block assembly 66. The outer ring 69 of the assembly 66 has a groove 76 for cooling tubes and block assembly 66 supports end punch assembly 70. Punch assembly 611 is similar to punch assembly 61. Die assemblies 62 and 621 are similar to each other and have rings 77 to 83 which form and laterally surround the reaction chamber and are annular and tapered, the thickness of each ring increasing outwardly in radial direction from said reaction chamber. Outer rings 83 and 831 have grooves 84 and 841 for coolant purposes and shoulders 85 and 851 for support purposes. Double-acting punch assembly 63 includes a pair of oppositely directed punches 92 and 921 with a cemented tungsten carbide insert 93 and binding rings 94 and 95 surround punches 92 and 921 and insert 93. Outer ring 95 includes a shoulder 96 for support purposes. The graphite in the form of discs in alternate stacked relationship with nickel discs or chromel is placed in the reaction vessels in die assemblies 62 and 621 and these reaction vessels may be heated to temperatures in excess of 1500 DEG C. by power supplied by conductor 100 and connector 101 to pad 65. To operate the process bed 591 is raised causing punch assembly 611 to engage die assembly 621 which engages punch assembly 63 which engages die assembly 62 which engages punch assembly 61.
